Has anyone ever had a rabies shot given to a dwarf? Long time since I have been on, The three Shortcakes, Zoey, Ice Cube, and Gimley are still with us. A lot of questions on giving Zoey a rabies shot, if safe? Reactions? Should we have one given or not if taken around people?

My husband and I rehab wild mammals. We have read a lot about rabies and do not recall reading about a horse that got it. However, any mammal can get rabies. I would check with my vet about giving the shot to a dwarf.

We gave our little Sally Rabies shots. Do you live where there are wild animals that might come into contact with your horse? even and especially bats can be carriers

Indiana is now wanting any animal that go to schools, nursing homes, out where they may bite someone to have a rabies vaccination and since Zoey goes to these places off and on she needs one. Sometimes we do get skunks and raccoons in our barn and property. I know that the rabies vaccination is just a one shot no matter what size and I worry about it being for a 1200 lb horse verses a 80 lb horse. Thanks for replys.

Sandy, so glad to hear from you, and to know that you still have all your dwarf babies! :-)

All my dwarfs have had a rabies vaccination, without any adverse reactions. However, i do not vaccinate my animals every year, like I used yo, as mire and more, i read that we are over vaccinating our animals, and that it is not necessary. Rabies last for several years, as do many of the other vaccinations.

A horse at a friend's boarding barn DID get rabies, i saw it, but thank goodness it was at a distance. ..not a pretty site! My friend and everyone who had come in contact with the horse had to go through the series of shots! Sad

Thanks for all the responses. I was worried about making the dwarves sick. So before Zoey goes out again I will have the vet give her a rabies shot.

I think lil Zoey should be just fine, but as you know, with ANY injection there is always a chance of an adverse reaction....... This is JMO, but I would have the vet administer it in her wittle bottom, like I would with any injection.

Be sure to give all the special babies some extra sugars from Auntie Nell and the Biscuits, Dusty, Sealtainn, Inky, Smidgen and Trinket 💙💚💛💜💙💚

I got a good lecture from the vet about always vaccinating for rabies...after our little Iris had neuro symptoms before she died, and had not been vaccinated..they had to send her head in to be tested, it took 10 days! Then they finally called me to say it was negative, I said PHEW! I don't have to get the shots! They said OH! it would be too late if you did!! scary, now I follow those rules on rabies...:/ It turned out that Iris had a brain abcess from strangles.. Crying or Very sad

Gosh! When was this, Jeanie?
And I'm assuming THAT Iris was a horse?

yes Janell, this was back in Pahrump, remember when we lost Iris? She was Angel's buddy....she had a snot nose then it went away, then one night she wouldn't eat, was spinning and head pressing, we rushed her in to Vegas to the big horse hospital but she died before morning... :( I had been trying to get her to eat with my hands in her mouth....
