Friends,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I just had to share this.

Val, my farrier lost a yearling last month (quarterhorse), in the most horrible way. Her horses have 20 acres of pasture & wooded lots. They come in at night after being in the pasture all day.

That night one of the yearlings didn't come up. They searched the property and found him half dead with one of his rear legs stuck between 2 small trees that had formed a "V" at about rump height. He had struggled so much that his leg was broken in 2 places with bones sticking out.

Val & her husband managed with great difficulty to remove the foot & the poor thing still continued to struggle. Val said she was crying the entire time. The vet is an hour away & she held him on the ground wrapped in a horse blanket until the vet arrived and put him down. The damage was too extensive.

The only way to explain how the hoof got there is that the horse stretched her back leg & it just got wedged.

Val has had to fence of the woodsy part of her acreage to ensure that this doesn't happen again. She's been there over 15 years and has always had 5 to 15 horses & this is the first occurrence of this sort.

Just another thing to consider!

Thank you for posting this, Christine...I'm so very soory for Val's loss! What a tragic accident!

Could Val & hubby just scout out the wooded area and cut down all the trees that have that danverous V in them, that's low down enough for something like this to happen again? Or perhaps just cut on side of the V off? That way the horses could still use the wooded area?

There was a forward that was going around a long time ago, about a horse that had gotten cought in the middle of a V in a tree, it was higher up and it had gotten the front half of it's body in it.

I think I will move this thread to the health care section of the forum, but still leave it here as well.

Crying or Very sad How sad Val had this happen to her baby. This is the article about the filly caught, but she wasn't seriously injured.
