Smokey didn't have a very good life before he came to live at Johnny Creek Farm, 7 years ago, he was left as a stallion for about 25 years, and the lady that had him couldn't keep him fenced in, he kept getting out of her barbed wire fencing, and by the looks of his front legs, it got the best of him at one time or another. Apparently then another gentleman bought this old pony and had him gelded, and I guess he did stay in the pasture from then on, but I was told it was mostly a junk yard, instead of a pasture. Sad A lady felt sorry for him and bought him for her friend's nephew, Joey. He had a pretty good life for the next few years, but Joey outgrew him and Aunt Linda moved away, leaving Smokey in her brother's care. Smokey was moved to another man's place, where he had no grass to try to nibble on, and apparently only got fed a couple times a week, as he was VERY thin, he'd not been wormed for over a year, and his halter was making a sore on the top of his nose, because it was never removed. His hooves were in horrible shape, and he was left in his corral, standing in flood water up to the middle of his belly for almost a week. That's when Aunt Linda came back to Texas, and discovered his plight. She called and begged me to please take Smokey, and I couldn't refuse.

Smokey spent the last 7 years here at Johnny Creek farm, this was his retirement home. He did give a few pony rides now and then, but mostly hung out under his shade trees, nibblin' a few blades of grass, wadding them up into a ball, and spitting them out, enjoying his Equine Sr. and playing in his water tank....that was his all time favorite thing to do, and he did it until the day he left us. Smile

Smokey's old body, which the vets figure was at least 40 years old, was finally getting old and just plain worn out, he didn't give up easily, and fought to live until the very end. But he was getting too weak to get up by himself, and he knew that he was finally too weak, even for Momma to help him up anymore, and he was afraid to lie down, knowing that I could not get him up, if he did. Sad And he just did not even feel like eating anymore, nothing tasted good, and it just took too much energy to chew. Sad

I asked Dr. Lamp to help old Smokey to cross over the Rainbow Bridge so that he could finally rest....as I KNOW that is what he wanted, he was so very tired.

The grand old gentleman is greatly missed, it's so strange to look out into his paddock, and not see him standing under his shade tree anymore, but he's in a better place now, full of life once again and able to graze on the lush grass in Heaven, and able to run free without any aches or pains....that's a "good thing". Very Happy

Goodbye old Smokey, we miss you little man.

A good memorial Janell. He was ready to go but you'll see again one day.
