Thank you for posting the update on lil' Mickey Lisa...we were all wondering how he was doing!
Sure glad all went well for the little fella.

Did the vet give you a time frame on how long it would be, before it was safe to let him live with the girls?
My vet told me at least 4 weeks for little Inky.

Boy! is he a happy little fella now, that he can be with the girls all the time, well except for when they get a little bossy with him! Laughing
When treats are being handed out, he stands back and lets Momma bring them to him, he doesnt want to get inthe middle of those cranky girls! NO SIR! Laughing

I'm glad you brought that up Janell, I did ask the vet how long we should keep him away from the girls and he said that it varies, from 30 to 45 days. But, after he said that he talked like that was just to wait for the hormones to get out of their system so they wouldn't pester the girls to death. Mickey has never acted like he had any hormones. So, I left there thinking that he was no longer fertile......even though that isn't exactly what was said. Is that what you are saying? Is that he could still be fertile until the hormones are gone?

I have a feeling that Mickey will be the same way as Inky, I'm sure Fancy will be the one wearing the pants!

Yes, it takes about 4 weeks for all the teststrone to get out of their sysyem completely, and apparently a gelding can still impregnate a mare for up to 4 weeks after being gelded because of the sperm that's still in their system.

You can probably play it by ear, since Mickey has never acted "studdy" around the girls. Inky certainly DID act quite studdy around the girls, that's why when he was about a year old I seperated him, as that's when he started getting interested in the girls. I hated to seperate him, but I just could NOT take a chance of my girl Biscuits getting pregant...it was scary having him on the farm...because ya just never know when a gate isn't going to get latched correctly or sompin'! And with my bad case of CRS...well Rolling Eyes

Lisa, so glad to hear the operation was successful and that Mickey did well during it.
On our big horses when they've been gelded the vet told us 4-6 weeks apart - and that up til this time they could get a mare pregnant. Although most of ours were usually too sore to try - I think - I don't know as we did keep them separate but they sure didn't act like there was a desire hardly even a desire to walk let alone try - well you know!!

Thanks Janell and Vickie for the info! I will just keep them seperated for now. Poor little Mickey, I figure he was probably always in too much pain to think about the girls before Crying or Very sad From the way he has always acted, you would've thought he was already a gelding. It won't hurt them to wait a few more weeks. Wink

Lisa, how is little Mickey feeling today??

I hope he's not having any swelling or stiffness...is he?

With Inky it was quite warm here, so even though the vet told me it was not necessary, I took the hose and hyrdoed his incisions with a nice stream of water, not too much pressure, but just enough clean the incisions, as for a few days there was a little oozing from them, and shavings would stick on them and they would be a little bit crusty. Once the water had loosened up the gunk andI would very carefully scrape the shaving off, and the incisions were once again opened up for free drainage. Inky acted like he enjoyed this proceedure and that it felt good to him. Bless his little heart, he jumped up into the big ol' stock trailer 2 hours after his surgery and not once did he ever act like he was in any pain what so ever.. wasn't stiff or sore at all. Can ya belive that the instrustions on his release form said to exercise him at a trot for 20 minutes a day! Shocked The little fella had not trotted for 20 minutes his intire life! Ya just have to use your own judgement on these things and do what is best for each horse. JMO

He got his normal exercise of grazing all day, and he was just fine. I hope little Mickey is doing so well! Very Happy
