I guess it is a really bad time of the year for farm calls. My vet has not been able to make it out here yet. Mostly we have talked about the babies on the phone.
I finally got fed up with it and found a new vet. She is not too far away and will be here on Monday. I am so thankful to find her.
When I change Winnie's splint it is sad that her poor little hoof is turned under. It seems like she is pretty unhappy when I take it off. She just stomps that little hoof and won't walk much until I have the splint back on.
My daughter promises to be here this weekend so we can work on pictures of her hooves for Janell. Sometimes it is pretty hard to get anything done. My husband is disabled so can't help. It is near impossible to hold her still and take pictures at the same time.

I'm glad that you have found another vet, Melanie! Very Happy

Winnie will be 3 weeks old very soon, and then she will be able to wear her glue on shoes.

Actually, if you have a scroll saw you could even make her a little shoe for that bad leg, out of a thin piece of wood, and tape it onto her hoof with some exasticon tape....I did that with Little Bit until I found out about the thin aluminum. I could send you a picture of a pattern I would use for that hoof.

You ought to measure her hooves and I can make her shoes, and you can also try taping them on as well.

All the baby slippers have come off now, haven't they?

The farrier removed the baby shoes from both back hooves. He also trimmed them some.
I would love to have a pic of the pattern Janell.
I think I can measure her hooves but don't know about the pics. Just keeping my fingers crossed my daughter will be here tomorrow and help me.
I took the splint off this morning to give her a break. I can change the splint myself. Winnie just lays there for me and I honestly think she knows I am trying to help. She is just precious.

So glad to hear this Melanie! Did he do the same for little Firecracker?

If you would measure Winnie's hooves, I can design her shoes.
To measure her hooves, the width is across the widest part of the hoof, and the length, is from the toe to the buttress of the heels.(where the hoof ends)

Yes, little Winnie know you are helping her, bless her little heart. Very Happy

My new vet was here yesterday. She fell in love with both of the babies.

For Winnie some I already knew from the forum and Janell but this is her opinion. She did a thorough exam of her little legs.
She wants me to splint Winnie's legs with wood on the outside. She told me to make sure it extends over 2 joints so to the upper part of her legs. Her would like her in splints 12 hours on and 12 hours off. She suggested this since it will be harder for Winnie to get up and down. Also, it will give time for her to exercise the tendons in her legs as well as rest easier on the off time. She said the vet wrap needs to be tight but not constricting. I need to make sure the leg is perfectly straight when it is splinted. She also liked the idea of the foam pipe wrap to protect her from the wood.

Any opinions?

As far as Firecracker goes she feels that my farrier can do come corrective trimming which will help him. He no longer walks on the toe of his hooves. He is a typical little colt. Running, kicking, bucking.....and biting. Working on the biting. A little correction goes a long way even if he is cute.....

I would say, this is OK ( but not sure I would brace above her hock) until she is 3 weeks old, then she needs to wear my Magic Shoes, or some kind of corrective shoes. I really don't believe that bracing her legs will correct her legs, only keep her up on her hooves, while the beaches are on.
You are going to have to be very carful with the braces. Not sure I agree with the 12 hrs. On and 12 hours off either ...but this is all JMO

See this kind of worried me Janell. You know babies they are always sleeping. I was afraid of her laying in the sun and not being able to get up on her own.

I am not always home so I would not be able to help her.

I have not changed anything yet just trying to figure this all out. I do sincerely appreciate your feedback. I think you feel the same way I do.

If Winnie were mine, I would put my shoes on her as soon as she turned 3 weeks old...as that's when it's OK to use the glue.

Melanie, YOU have to decide what you want to do with her little legs.

If money is a problem, you know I will always send my shoes off for free.
The adhesive gets a bit expensive, but I would charge you only what I have in it, I make very little on it anyway, actually with the shipping to me, I don't make any money on the adhesive and tips. I just can't afford to give the adhesive away, not right now anyway. Sad

You do have to be careful with the dwarf babies, as I don't I think they are able to control their body temperature, like a normal foal, and if they lie down in the sun and fall sound to sleep, they can over heat.
Do the babies have plenty of shade where they are during the day?.... if so that sure would help.

My daughter is taking care of Winnie's expenses. We won't have a problem with that.
I was worried about her lying in the sun too much is good reason I didn't agree with the vet and putting the splints too high up.
As far as shade no problem because we have several nice big trees. But you know, she still lays anywhere so I often have to go out and get her up as I do with Firecracker. My neighbors are also good about keeping an eye on them so will let me know if they are worried about them.

Sorry I have been missing some posts due to an unexpected problem in my office. I hope you can get the shoes on asap. Wink Please be cautious about splinting, as pressure sores can develop and they can be hard to heal. If possible, I would leave dwarf babies in a pen that is totally shaded during hot days too. I know that is hard to do sometimes.
My little Sally liked to lay in the sun back in Nevada but it was just too hot for her, I think her sweating ability was rather delayed. I would love to see pics when you are able, best of luck, I know the shoes will help alot! It is great you found Janell at this early stage of development Very Happy

Just wanted to let you know Winnie will be living at
Summit Equestrian Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

This is her picture when she arrived at the center.

They plan to make her part of their therapy program for disabled children. I am so proud of her.

This was a note they sent to me Smile
We are interested in putting together a story book about accepting people with disabilities for their literacy program. All the books on that subject are awkward & no fun. Imagine a story about Winnie, her friends at the barn & how she is accepted & loved for her strengths

This is their website -

Firecracker has also found a great home with a nice family. He has several mini friends and full size horses as well.
