Hi guys,
I have a mini dwarf who is 3 1/2 weeks old - she is getting an aggressive hoof trim today followed by magic shoes by Janell which I have to have her make. Janell said to use Durasole after the trim but I can't find any locally - even tried Tuff Stuff but nobody has anything to toughen the sole - only hoof conditioners. I have something here and don't know whether to use it today after the trim or not use anything at all, since I just can't find anything to use and he is coming in a few hours. The product I have is called Cut Heal Hoof Heal - ingredients are Raw Lindseed oil, spirits of turpentine, pure venhadin oil, bees wax, balsam of firm and oil of vitriol. Looks like it would be very gooey and attract dirt and hay on the bottoms of her feet so really not sure if I should do this or not. I have plain iodine I could put on there until I can order some Durasole or Tuff Stuff.

Anyone know what I should do?

I have never used the Durosole before so don't have experience with it. When there has been a bit of blood, I simply poured peroxide over the area twice. Then I kept her in a clean area and it stopped quickly. Yes, an aggressive trim is necessary but blood should not be streaming continually. We trimmed Dolly to some bleeding which stopped soon and then we trimmed again in a few days when the bloodline receded a bit. We did this until her hooves were as short as they could be and then trimmed her often with rasping in between to keep them that way. We also do not take off a large amount in a clip with the nippers but a few smaller amounts. That way you have more control when quite a bit needs to be removed.

Thanks - I ordered the durasole only to have someone tell me not to use it as it contains a formaldehyde formulation and that is known to cause cancer. I just can't win.

It went very well - we did exactly as Janell said to do and she is walking better on the front. Still needs some magic shoes for the back but I think we won't need any on the front. We are getting there!!

Sandy I hope you don't mind but I am going to move your thread to the Dwarf Discussion part of the forum so that more people are sure to see it. Thank you for sharing these photos!

Her front feet look so much better! What a doll she is! Very Happy I definitly think she needs the shoes in back. You will see tremendous improvement once you put the shoes on. Smile

Sandy, you are doing great with your adorable little girl!

My Button improved dramatically after her first trim....and Janell's wonderful "Magic Shoes" kept her rear hooves as straight as possible while she was young. She has now been "shoe free" for a year, and her little hooves stay pretty straight as long as I keep them short.

Here is what she looked like before trimming at two months old.
