Hey Janell.

Like i said before and before that....THANK YOU!!

we got the shoes on....what drama did we have with that...my vet is ticked off to say the least. LONG STORY!!!

so the shoes worked...just like i suggested when he was a few days old..but anyhow...Sammi is painful. My vet put him on equinoxx...to keep the inflamation down...so he's on that twice a day. he's still painful though..she says to take them off NOW!! me and becky seem to think otherwise. please help ... how long is the normal time for the pain to go away. he's not down....though he does rest more often...and gets off his feet. whe he stands up ... he stretches his heind legs...i guess that feels a bit more comfortable for him...but he still takes very slow steps to move anywhere...how long will the pain last? should we take them off? please help!!

smooches from Sammi!
Thanks!

Little Sammi's legs look GREAT Nella! Bravo

Well, I certainly am NOT surprised that the little fella is feelin' some pain!...how many months has he been walking on the sides of his hooves now???

This is a BIG change in the way this little guy has been walking; tendons were stretched on one side and the ones on the opposite side are now being stretched, while the others will shrink back up to where they should be in time....all this is gonna make the little fella hurt. Sad Please tell little Sammi, Auntie Nell is sorry.

If you can keep him walking and having his normal exercise, following
Momma around grazing, this will really help him to adjust to him having his shoes on.

The Equioxx is supposed to be much easier on their tummies, than Banamine...don't know if it will work as well or not though. It still wouldn't hurt to give Sammi some Maalox, Zantac or Tagament to protect his tummy...but I'm not your vet, so be sure to go through her first, K?

It would have been MUCH easier on little Sammi, if he'd had his *Magic Shoes* as a newbie, but better late and never!

I would think you should see him feeling better in a week....but here again I am NOT a vet, so I can not advise you about taking the shoes off....What was the reason your vet gave you for taking the shoes off, NOW?

You will have to e-mail me with the whole scoop on all the drama and why your vet is so ticked off. Laughing

Sending some extra sugars to that baby boy.

WELL....becky and i suggested magic shoes when he was 2 days old...remember becky calling you?? yeah, well my vet advised against it. so there i was wrapping his feet 3 times a day..and they would still fall off. we tried the vet and her hubby the farrier like 6 times...and after it got to the point of me having no more money to spend on things that weren't working...i wanted to try you again...the vet said no...take him to surgery. we i'm sorry..i don't have $4000 for surgery!

so i contacted you and so on. we put the shoes on after $60 dollars...and he was in pain and she was ticked off. she said SEE! he's in pain and this is not good for him...take him to the surgery now! even though the shoes did straighten him up...i think she was upset that she advised against the shoes when she saw what good they did. but then again...the day started off with me not calling her...but the farrier to come put the shoes on. i didn't think she would need to be there to supervise...i think thats why she was mad b/c when she pulled up...hubby and i were holding sammi on his side....with NO DRUGS...he was calm...cuz he's a good boy..and she insited a few times to give him drugs..i asked her not to if we don't have to b/c its not good for dwarfs...she said SHE is my vet..nobody else. whatever...the story goes.

but he had wrapping for 2.5 months on his feet...he's just a little over 3 months now....so yes..i know he's painful...my heart brakes for him. but the vet advised stall confinment b/c of the pain..so him and mommy are in the stall since...but if he needs exercise...i will put them out into a pen.

*sigh*

i gotta run to feed and check on sammi...be back soon!

thanks again

Nella,
I don't mean to sound judgemental but your vet sounds a bit "prima-donna-ish" to me. YOU know your horses better than anyone, being a vet or not. YES, a vet knows much more than we do but your gut, daily observation and interaction, and your experience with Sammi tells you what is right and what is not. As long as Sammi is trimmed aggressively, and does not have ANY excess hoof under the shoes, he should come around after the initial critical change to his tendons, joints, bone positioning etc (which will be all the way up through his shoulders and back). If he is walking at all, that is a great sign. My Lily only walked by severely crossing her legs and then collapsing under great stress. She was not a candidate for the shoes due to her panicky reaction. This does not sound like the case with sweet Sammi.
Give him lots of kisses and praise along with steady supervision and I'll bet you will see him adapting. Just remember, any excess hoof on the side he was down on will force his angle too much with the shoes applied. Really keep those feet in a balanced aggressive trim even though it may be a bit hard to see. I look from the hairline down to compare sides and angles. This helps me to see if we have enough trimmed from a part that is angling under the hoof from the pressure of being stepped on. Try to imagine how that foot would look if stepping correctly. You should be able to see that now that the shoes are on. If there is too much left on one side, the hairline will appear tilted when looking from the front, then take them off and redo the trim, then reapply. Being overly corrected because of uneven trimming will cause tremendous and unnecessary pain. Of course, simply the correction alone, even with perfect trimming, will usually cause pain as well but eventually he will be a much happier and surefooted little boy.
Please keep us posted and give one of your kisses from me okay?

Debi is right Nella...I remember when you called and left a message before your farrier was to come trim Sammi, before his shoes were applied, you mentioned, if I remember correctly, that the farrier thought he should leave Sammi's hooves with one side longer than the other, and I called and left you a message saying, no I felt that he needed to have his hooves balanced, that way the shoe will get him walking flat on is hooves and the hoof would be balanced like it should be. I guess we were playing phone tag, huh? Wink ....how did your farrier trim Sammi? Was it your vet's husband? (I confuse easily!) Confused

Well, I also hate to pass judgment on your vet, but it's a good thing I don't have to deal with this woman!!!! Mad Why in the world would she continue to want to sedate the little fella, when he did NOT need it? I have NEVER had to sedate ANY of my Biscuits to trim their hooves, nor has Dr. Honnas up at A & M!...it certainly has NOT been necessary!

If Sammi had gotten his *Magic Shoes* applied MUCH earlier, he would not be so uncomfortable right now!.... Bless his little heart. Sad

Your vet was so concerned about Sammi being in some pain...what kind of pain does she think the little thing would be in, if she did surgery on him????? That and having to possibly deal with an infection, diarrhea, or any number of other things that go along with surgery????....if he survived it! Plus it's dangerous to put dwarf Minis under anesthesia!

I do feel that Sammi NEEDS normal exercise with his shoes on, he needs to use those little legs to strengthen them....JMO

I am keeping lil' Sammi in my thoughts and prayers.
Please keep us posted on him, if you will Nella.
Sendin' some more sugars for that baby boy, tell him Auntie Nell is AWFUL proud of him. flirting

hopefully for him...it will end up in a positive way.

again...thanks guys!

sammi is up on his feet this morning. i let him and his mom out of the stall. he grazes...then takes a step...then grazes...then a step..and so on. he is painful still....but tomorrow will be a week that he's on the meds. i would like to finish off his perscription before i decide whether to take them off or not. hopefully by that time it will only get better and not worse. ??

i gave him 4 kisses this morning...i just had to give him an extra one from me LOL...cuz i love him more Smile

we live and we learn. this has definately been such a huge learning experience for me. If i ever decide to adpot another little sammi...i will be harassing you Janell...from the moment he/she is born.

on a different note...what do you guys think of Thumbelina??
I saw their website...and what they're trying to do and all. I think its awesome how she's 6 YEARS OLD!! wow! I am hoping Sammi reaches even half that!

Take care and have a wonderful day!

there are two sides of every story...maybe in her eyes..we were doing something wrong.
